Faulty Power Points – Outlets Loose Fitting or Feel Hot

Some electronic chargers, such as laptops and cell phone chargers, tend to heat up as they convert the voltage from AC to DC power, but they should not emit strong heat. If one does get too hot, turn it off, unplug it and try using a different power outlet. If it again becomes hot, then it is probably faulty and you should discontinue using it, as it may well be a fire hazard.

If the power outlet is warm when these devices are unplugged, this will need to be addressed immediately, as you most likely have a problem with either loose wires, a broken outlet, or an overloaded circuit. If your outlet is cool enough, unplug any unnecessary devices or turn the circuit off entirely. Then contact the Mellor Electrical Group to inspect and replace any damaged wiring or outlets.

Contacts inside power outlets can wear out over time, causing the prongs to lose their grip on your plug. This can be serious because loose plugs have a high chance of arcing and flying sparks, no matter how small, can set dust and dry wood behind the wall surface on fire. Replace them as soon as possible!
